st louis trip part 3!

so after the excitement of the day before, we decided to take a slow leisurely trip home.

we rose early and headed up the missouri side of the mississippi river. there were a couple places that we wanted to stop by on the way back to peru.

the first was hannibal, MO. otherwise known as the birthplace of samuel clemens. otherwise known as mark twain.  there are a few cool things around this area. the first place we stopped was mark twain's cave. this is the cave that he wrote into The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  they do these guided tours and there were some really cool cave structures to see. i hadn't brought my camera with me, but i stole these pictures from the website.

i personally love how the rock looks so wet and drippy. i feel like we visited a cave that looked like this when i was little but can't remember where.

they call this flow rock, i wonder why...

the rest of hannibal is pretty touristy, but we ate lunch out of the cooler by the river, fed some birds and got on the road.

so as we stopped in various towns on the way back the robot and i realized something: everything is closed on memorial day. EVERYTHING. shops, restaurants, entire towns. it was kinda ridiculous. so we didn't do much more stopping on the way back, and made it back to peru just in time for dinner!

it was really an amazing little trip, even with all my injuries! and who knew st louis/missouri had so much cool stuff in it? not me, and i can't wait to go back!
